HOW IT WORKS
Ok. Here is the skinny. Each week, you as a team owner select a team of the three drivers which you think will finish well during the race. How your drivers finish the race determines how many points you accumulate toward your overall point total. Points will be awarded the same way NASCAR calculates points. The winning driver receives 175 points, 2nd place receives 170 points, 3rd receives 165, etc... Drivers who lead a lap receive an additional 5 bonus points. The driver who leads the most laps receives another 5 points.
In determining which drivers receive how many points, I will be using the official results listing posted at www.nascar.com. Their event result lists are the final word on who finished in what position and I will abide by them.
After each race, the total points earned for each of the drivers you placed in your starting lineup will be totaled and added to your overall season score. This is the basis for determining team standings within the fantasy league. Your team points total will be a running tally of how the drivers you chose performed for the races you chose them.
Season bonus points will be awarded upon the conclusion of the 2001 NASCAR Winston Cup season.
· A bonus of 50 points will be awarded to the team/teams which have accumulated the most wins over the course of the season. A win occurs when you as an owner pick a driver which wins a race.
· A bonus of 50 points will be awarded to the team/teams which owns the "Single Race Points Award" at the end of the season. This award is for the highest one week points total of the season.
CHOOSING YOUR TEAM
You choose a team of three drivers for each race from the list of available drivers on the Driver List page. There are four groups of drivers to choose from. They are listed in the order in which they finished the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup season. Group One contains drivers who placed 1-15th overall, Group Two contains drivers who placed 16-30th overall, Group Three contains drivers who placed 31-45th overall and Group Four contains drivers who finished below 45th in the overall points standings.
You are allowed to choose one Group One driver, one Group Two driver and one Group Three driver for your starting lineup each race. You can, however, substitute drivers and get a driver from a lower group (More on how you do this later).
What I feel this format gives you is a great deal of flexibility over the course of a season. I have personally been in fantasy leagues where you are tied into a set of drivers selected at the beginning of the season. A few misfortunes and/or injuries and your season is in trouble. Success in this format will focus more on your ability as a team owner to use your "racing vision" to field what you believe is the best team under ever-changing circumstances. Your destiny is in your hands.
Over the course of the season you must meet 2 driver requirements when submitting your lineup. Penalties will be assessed at the end of the season for not meeting them. They are listed below.
DRIVER REQUIREMENT 1: Over the course of the season, you must start each and every driver in Groups One, Two and Three at least once. This should not be a problem as there are 36 races and only 15 drivers in each group. Group Four drivers can be completely ignored if you wish. They are available, however, if you think they may be of benefit to your team.
The penalty for not starting a driver during the season is 50 points off your season total for each driver you did not start. This penalty will be assessed after the last race of the season. You may substitute to take care of the requirement of starting injured or inactive drivers. When doing so, you must state in your starting lineup that you are substituting to satisfy the start requirement. For example, let's say that Dale Earnhardt is injured and out for the remainder of the season. You have not started him yet, so to fulfill the requirement of one start for Dale, your email might say something like this:
"Substituting Kenny Wallace for Dale Earnhardt".See examples on submit team page.
DRIVER REQUIREMENT 2: No driver may be used in excess of 5 times during the season. The penalty for starting a driver 6 times or more will be 50 points for each start above the 5th start. This penalty will be administered at season end.
***NOTE: An effort has been made to remove drivers from the list who have, as a result of injury or death, retired from racing. Those who have retired under "normal" circumstances or lost their ride from the previous year remain in the Driver List. There is always the possibility that they will rejoin the tour. Drivers who have retired under "normal" circumstances or lost their ride in previous years have been removed from the Driver List. As a result of this action it is possible that the four groups may not be based exactly on positions 1-15, 16-30, 31-45 and 46+ as mentioned above.
DRIVER SUBSTITUTIONS
As mentioned before, you make up your starting lineup by choosing one driver from driver Groups One, Two and Three. You may, however, choose to substitute and pick a driver from a lesser group to replace a driver from a higher group. For example, you may choose to start a Group One driver and two Group Three drivers. You may even choose to start three Group Four drivers. I can't imagine a situation where you would want to do that, but the option is there. When substituting, please state in your lineup that you are substituting.
***NOTE: A driver does not need to appear on the Driver List to be used as a substitute. New faces come along all the time. Anyone who is eligible to start a NASCAR Winston Cup race may be used as a substitute. Added to group four (4)
SUBMITTING YOUR STARTING LINE UP
You must submit your starting lineup via e-mail by midnight Thursday for Sunday races and by midnight Wednesday for Saturday races. The only exception is where qualifying takes place before these days (The Daytona 500 for example). In those circumstances, lineups are due midnight before qualifying opens. Please be aware of when qualifying occurs. Notifications on when qualifying is will not be sent out. Check NASCAR Online for the weekend race schedules. Don't be caught napping!
Please use the submit team button on submit page when submitting your lineups.
Make sure that the name of your team is in the body of the message along with the three drivers you have chosen for the race And the race you are submitting the team for.See examples
If no starting lineup is received, the lineup submitted last will be "rolled over" and used for the upcoming race.
INACTIVITY
Teams which do not submit a starting lineup for three consecutive races will be dropped from the league and their spot will be opened for newcomers. If you foresee that you will be unable to submit starting lineups for a prolonged period of time, it is suggested that you make advance arrangements (i.e. submit your starting lineups in advance) with the administrator to get your lineups in.
MID-SEASON TEAM ENTRANTS
In the event that a spot opens and a new team is accepted into the league after the season is underway, that new team will be started with a point total equal to the last place team. This way new teams are not put at the overwhelming disadvantage of starting with zero points. At least there is a fighting chance.
INCIDENTALS
· Driver penalties are occasionally handed out to drivers by NASCAR. The majority of these are monetary fines, but every once in a while Winston Cup points are taken away from a driver. In the event that this occurs and a team has chosen the penalized driver to be in their lineup the following adjustments to W.C. Challenge points will occur. 1) One half of the points NASCAR took away from the driver will be deducted from the unlucky team that chose that driver. 2) All competitors will receive a bonus if their drivers would have finished ahead of the penalized driver. EXAMPLE: A driver finishes in 20th position and is awarded 100 Winston Cup points. NASCAR penalizes this driver 100 points (in effect, disqualifying the driver). Any teams that chose the disqualified driver will have 50 points deducted from their point total and all drivers chosen in lineups who finished below 20th place will be awarded 3 more points (in effect, improving their finish position by 1 place).
· If for some reason, a driver whom you have chosen is not able to start a race, no points will be awarded to your team for that driver.
· If a driver you have chosen starts a race but is unable to finish (e.g. your driver gets out and a replacement driver finishes the race for your driver) you will be awarded points based on the finishing position of the car in which your driver started the race.
· If your driver does not start a race but gets into another car and finishes the race for another driver, no points will be awarded to your team for that driver.
· If your driver starts a race and is unable to finish in that car, but does get into another car as a replacement driver, your driver is awarded points based on the finishing position of the car in which that driver started the race.
Basically, what all of the above means is that you can only get points for a driver if he/she starts a race, and only for the car in which your driver started the race.
If during the course of the season, situations arise which require some form of ruling, the decision of the administrator will be final.
